What's Inside Your Water Heater Tank? Sediment Buildup, Explained
If your water heater rumbles, pops, or runs out of hot water faster than it used to, the most likely cause is sediment — a layer of hard mineral grit that settles on the bottom of the tank. It forces the burner or element to work harder to heat the same water, and left alone it shortens the life of the tank. A flush often fixes it early. Once the tank is corroding or leaking, replacement is the fix.
Here's what's actually happening inside that tank, how to catch it before you're standing in a cold shower, and how to decide between a flush, a repair, and a new unit.
What sediment actually is
Water carries dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium. When water is heated, those minerals drop out of solution and settle. Add in fine sand and grit that travels through the supply line, and you get a gritty layer across the bottom of your tank.
You never see it. That's the problem. It builds up quietly over years while the heater keeps working, just less and less efficiently.
On a gas water heater
The burner sits under the tank. Sediment acts like an insulating blanket between the flame and the water above it. The burner runs longer, the steel at the bottom of the tank gets hotter than it was designed to get, and that heat stress wears out the tank lining faster.
The popping and rumbling you hear? That's water trapped under the sediment layer boiling and forcing its way out. It's not harmless noise — it's a symptom.
On an electric water heater
The lower heating element gets buried. Once it's packed in sediment, it can overheat, burn out, or stop contributing much at all. You end up running on essentially half a water heater, which is why the hot water disappears halfway through the second shower.
Warning signs of sediment buildup
Watch for these. Most homeowners notice two or three before anything actually fails:
- Popping, rumbling, or crackling from the tank during a heating cycle
- Hot water runs out sooner than it used to, with the same household routine
- Slow recovery — it takes much longer to get hot water back after a shower
- Rusty, cloudy, or gritty hot water at the tap, especially first thing in the morning
- Higher energy bills with no change in how much hot water you use
- A weak or sputtering flow at the hot side of faucets
- Moisture, rust, or a small puddle near the base of the tank
- The temperature-pressure relief valve discharging or dripping
That last pair matters most. Water pooling around the base usually means the tank itself has failed. At that point there is no repair — the tank gets replaced.
Why sediment gets worse right before you need hot water most
Cold weather makes an aging water heater look far worse than it did in July. The incoming supply water is colder, so the heater has to raise it further to reach the same temperature. Recovery time stretches. A tank that was quietly limping along at 60% capacity all summer suddenly can't keep up with morning showers.

When repair makes sense
Some failures are components, not the tank. A burned-out lower element, a failed thermostat, a bad thermocouple, a leaking valve, or a spent anode rod can often be replaced for far less than a new unit. A licensed technician can test which it is instead of guessing.

Yes — just differently. There's no tank for grit to settle in, but minerals still deposit as scale inside the heat exchanger. Scale restricts flow, reduces heat transfer, and can trigger error codes or inconsistent water temperature.
The fix is descaling on a regular schedule rather than flushing a tank. Signs to watch for on a tankless unit:
- Water that swings between hot and cold mid-shower
- Reduced hot water flow rate
- Error codes on the display
- The unit shutting down under heavy demand
