Bathroom Maintenance Tips Lists

Faucet Maintenance

Whether you are taking a shower, washing your hands, or cleaning, keeping your sources of water, such as the sinks and bathtub faucets is necessary for a successful bathroom experience. Check out these bathroom maintenance tips to maintain your bathroom faucet:

  • running faucets that get the job done well:
Unlike pipes, the moving parts of a bathroom faucet can wear down quickly and might need to be gradually tightened or even replaced more often than other plumbing parts. Einstein Pros’ bathroom plumbing services can help you understand how regularly you need to replace these parts.
  • Fix leaky faucets immediately. Doing so will help you avoid further damage to the fixtures and faucets. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a leaky faucet dripping at one drip per second wastes at least 3,000 gallons of water per year — or the equivalent of what’s needed to take more than 180 showers.
  • Clean your faucet aerators. Lime buildup and sediments blocking the small openings inside the aerator can cause low water pressure from faucets or water leaks from the handle. Clean the aerator using the following steps:
  • Cautiously, unscrew the aerator by twisting it counterclockwise using your hand. If it’s difficult to extract, try wrapping the jaws of your pliers with masking tape and loosen the aerator with the pliers. Continue by hand.
  • Take aerator or spray head apart
  • Use a small brush soaked in vinegar to remove sediment
  • Reassemble the aerator and screw it back onto the faucet

Shower Head Maintenance

  • Shower heads can develop uneven spray when the holes become clogged with mineral deposits from the water. Follow these steps to clean it:
  • Unscrew the swivel ball nut by using an adjustable wrench or channel-type pliers. Tip: To protect the finish from scratches, wrap first the jaws of the tool with masking tape.
  • After unscrewing the collar nut from the shower head, gently clean the outlet and inlet holes of the shower head using a thin wire.
  • Flush the head with clean water, then reassemble the shower head.
  • To remove mineral deposits effortlessly. Just fill the plastic bag with vinegar, place it around the shower head — immersing the shower head in the liquid, and attach it to the neck with a twist tie. Leave it there overnight, then wipe off the mineral deposits with a damp cloth.

Toilet Maintenance and Inspecting Leaks

Toilets are a frequent source of bathroom leaks. It can leak from a few places — some more obvious than others. When toilet leaks form at the base of the toilet, the reason is usually a faulty wax seal.

Fix these toilet leaks immediately as they can also cause damage to the flooring and baseboards. To test your toilet for other possible leaks, follow these bathroom maintenance tips steps to inspect and correct the problem:

  • Check if the water level in the tank is not overflowing through the overflow pipe. The overflow pipe is the one with a small piece of tubing connected to it.
  • If your toilet is running or your tank is overflowing, adjust the fill valve until the water stops just about an inch below the top of the overflow tube. Examine if your toilet has a water level mark stamped on the side of the tank.
  • Test the flush valve mechanism by placing a few drops of food coloring into the toilet’s tank. Inspect the bowl after 15 minutes or so. If the water in the toilet bowl has changed color, then the ball or flapper is leaking. Replace the flapper immediately.
  • If there is colored water located at the base of your toilet, then you could be dealing with a cracked bathroom toilet as well. Call in a professional plumber to help you with this problem.

Here’s another tip for keeping the bathroom toilet in the best working condition possible:

  • Be careful on what you flush down the drain or the toilet. Avoid flushing sanitary products or diapers, facial tissue, cotton balls, make-up pads, as they do not dissolve and can clog the lines. Instead, keep a trash bin in each bathroom and toss these items away.

Avoiding and Fixing Bathroom Clogs

Bathroom clogs are stressful and are just no fun at all. Here are a few ways to prevent them, and fix them when they do occur:

  1. Run hot water down the drain once a week to help keep it free-flowing.
  2. Install strainers in showers and tubs to catch hair and soap residue. Don’t forget to clean the filters regularly.
  3. Avoid flushing things that don’t belong in the toilet.
